About

Freya Bennett is an award-winning screenwriter, playwright, lecturer and creative workshop leader based in East Anglia.

After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a B.A. in Scriptwriting and Performance, Freya began an internship with the script development team at Infinite Studios. Under the mentorship of writer/director Mike Wiluan, she honed her craft working across the slate at one of Southeast Asia’s leading film and television production companies.

As a screenwriter, Freya has developed content for production companies both in Southeast Asia and the U.K. and has been featured in the British Comedy Guide. In 2024, she was awarded BAFTA Connect membership in recognition of her promising career trajectory in the screen industries. She is also the creator and co-host of comedy interview podcast Big Little Interests, which was listed by The Independent as one of the top five new podcasts you should be listening to.

As a playwright, Freya was awarded the inaugural Norwich Theatre Royal/University of East Anglia Incubate playwrights bursary in 2023 and was the co-recipient of the Jarrold New Writing Prize at the Norfolk Arts Awards. That same year, her play ‘Teething’ placed in the top round of the Bush Theatre Open Submissions (out of almost 1000 entries), the top 5% of the Victoria Wood Playwriting Prize and the second round of the Papatango Prize.

Freya’s writing style is witty, elegant and non-didactic and places character at the heart of the narrative. She is also drawn to tragicomedy, the intersection of the human and the digital, mythology, LGBTQIA+ stories, dialogue that dances around hidden meanings and works about women, by women.

As well as writing, Freya is an accomplished lecturer and workshop practitioner of scriptwriting and narrative design. She has lectured on the Scriptwriting 101 course at the Eastern Education Group since 2023 and has led workshops for organisations, theatres and educational institutions across the UK and globally.

When she’s not writing, lecturing or podcasting Freya can be found cooking, walking her dog, planning increasingly niche Substack articles, buying more manga volumes than she needs or rewatching the ‘You won Jane’ clip from Come Dine With Me. She believes The Simpsons is the greatest TV show of all time and won’t be told otherwise.
